I'm still working through my Radeon problems.
I've tried the different suggestions offered here following my
earlier pleas for help. I.e. making sure the 'asm' and 'linux'
directories are placed right for the kernel recompile; checking that
the modes in fb.modes are legal, etc. (Haven't tried upgrading the
radeonfb driver yet. I'm still using 0.1.4, and see that there is, at
least, 0.1.6 available.) Thanks, but still, no joy.
I think my problem might be with the underlying radeonfb driver, or
the fbset package. (I noticed today a patch set for fbset that
applies a pretty significant set of changes.)
I just ran a different experiment that suggests to me that the
system I have here is closer to working than I had realized.
For completeness, the 'simple' program in the DirectFB Tutorial set
applies a framebuffer mode, draws a horizontal line across a black
screen, holds it for five seconds, then undoes its setup and exits.
The effect I've been seeing is that anytime I try applying a mode
with fbset the output where my monitor is connected looses its sync
and RGB signals. I've confirmed this with a scope now, earlier I'd
still considered that it might just be switching to a rate outside my
monitor's capabilities. Also, I checked, but couldn't find any sync
signals appearing at any of the other outputs on the video card.
Switching to a different virtual console (i.e. <alt><f2>) restores the
video and correct behavior. Likewise, running the simple program
causes the video card to drop sync for the duration, but upon exit it
it's restored.
The latest experiment sequence was
- boot the linux box in 640x480 mode
-- everything normal, VCs play fine
- apply an fbset mode (1024x768-60)
-- sync is dropped
- run ./simple --dfb:mode=640x480
-- screen stays dark for duration of 'simple,' but upon exit, sync
-- is restored, and it's switched to the 1024x768 mode and working
-- correctly as a VC.
Something in the exiting of the 'simple' program re-enabled the
video out to my VGA monitor, that fbset and entering 'simple' had
unset.
Another tidbit of information, I've been able to get the card to
work well enough with X11 -- but needed to override the detected video
ram, forcing it to use 4 Mb, rather than the 16 Mb it correctly found.
I think my next step is to try upgrading the radeonfb driver, to see
if there was more refinement there that will help. As always, I
appreciate any and all help.
