I'm still working through my Radeon problems. ... I think my next step is to try upgrading the radeonfb driver, to see if there was more refinement there that will help. As always, I appreciate any and all help.
This indeed was the cure to my problem. In short my symptom was that I could use fbset to latch a new mode (resolution), but any call to fbset would also cause the card to drop the sync signals. I found I could restore the video, tho', by rocking to another VC and then back.
I was using radeonfb verson 0.1.4 (as shipped with RH 7.3). I found and applied a set of patches to four files: radeonfb.c, radeonfb.h, radeon.h and pci_ids.h (actually the pci_ids.h was more of a merge than straight patch) to bring the driver up to v 0.1.6, and it immediately started working much better.
I'll tack on some benchmarks results -- this from a Radeon card plugged into a PCI slot on a 400 MHz Celeron x86 board running (mostly) RedHat 7.3. Makes it clear which tested functions are accelerated, no?
There is also a version 0.1.8 available and even a .9 I think, so I may wind up making further upgrades in the future.
