This command complains about TVon symbol is not existent.  When I leave
out TVon=1, I get stripes again and fbset still reports [EMAIL PROTECTED] :-(
Whatever I do, it always reports [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Ah, that is a reasonable explanation.  I disabled splash in grub menu.
Now, with the command you mentioned above, I still get stripes, but now
fbset reports [EMAIL PROTECTED]  Note that refresh is 74.5 instead of 50.
I have _no_ such entry in /etc/fb.modes. So how comes this?  Maybe I have
not properly disabled VGA frame buffer?  How do I do that?
