I'm trying to clarify what precisely are the aims of DirectFB.

The description of DirectFB on directfb.org seems to major on graphics
drawing and blitting, with the functions of video mixing less emphasised.

It seemed to me that a major part of DirectFB is the video mixing - both of
layers and through the window management. But all the specific functions
listed on the home page are graphics drawing, blitting and blending - that
is, all to do with constructing a single graphic surface. This would be
understandable if DirectFB in fact grew first as a way to abstract the
framebuffer, with the video mixing and window management added later - the
description not being updated to give due emphasis to these mixing
functions. I'm not sure of the history but am curious if this was the case.

I am also curious whether the window management and layer mixing are widely
used, or whether in practice DirectFB is used for drawing on a single
surface in exclusive mode? That is, does the stress given to graphics
drawing etc reflect the actual main uses?

In trying to describe DirectFB, do users agree that the video mixing and
window management are important parts of the API, and are these parts in
fact widely used?

Thanks,

Chris
