Removing the folders manually is certainly safe to do and is usually
what I do when I need to.

You can get dirvish-expire to do it for you, by editing the summary
files. The man page <http://www.dirvish.org/dirvish-expire.8.html>
explains how expired files are determined.

My personal opinion is that this is a very bad idea. Interfering with
the system's dates could affect any number of other systems, depending
on what you have installed. It's a pain anyway to turn off ntp etc etc.
