That isn't the question.

If you want openapp to find applications in the current directory, just add "." to your path. If you understand why this isn't a great idea, it is easy for your to live with the inconvenience of typing "openapp ./AppName.app".

I give a plus for Fred here.

Also, consider that if you have an application in your CWD, you can just open it by typing appname.app/appname
