The registry allows for a *maximum* of 10 years, also the registry requires
a payment for one year when you transfer.

If you transfer the above domain to OpenSRS, the transfer should add
approximately 60 days to the term of the domains bringing it to a full 10
years from the date of transfer.

If you transfer the same domain to Network Solutions, Network Solutions will
pretend the existing 10 years doesn't exist,and make the expiration/renewal
date one year from the transfer date.  To further complicate matters, the
registry still knows the correct expiration date, but Network Solutions
registrar will bill you at the end of the one year term and if you remain
with Network Solutions, you will have to continue paying for time you had
already paid for.  If you decide to transfer away from Network Solutions to
OpenSRS, you will regain your original paid term because OpenSRS goes by the
registry expriation date.

Basically this just shows that Network Solutions registrar is desperate for
money...
