I asked this the other day to support. No, you'll have to pay, but 
it'll expire 10 years from the day you xfer it (any additional time 
is "poof", gone).

That's just the way it is... Almost makes you want to only renew 
domains out to 9 years, "just in case" you need to xfer them, so you 
don't waste any renewal years...
