It would seem appropriate for a period of time to put the domain on HOLD status, so that it is removed from the root servers (which would quickly wake up the domain owner, and the RSP) Example of a domain that expires March 30th: On Mar 1 the user receives a 30 day "up for renewal notice" On Mar 30 if no payment received, the domain goes ON HOLD On Apr 29 the domain gets deleted and can be re-registered. (I didn't see any mention of ON HOLD status in the DRAFT spec. Did I miss it?)
