May I ask why not? It seems a little incongruous that Tucows is making a
big stink about trying to change ICANN rules to create an opt-in system,
but you haven't created a simple opt-out system even though current rules
permit it.
If you created a an opt-out system that was accessible using the XML
interface, resellers could put a checkbox on the register screen that
end-users could check to opt out from the get-go.
This would be a significant marketing advantage for resellers. "Unlike
Network Solutions, we don't sell your personal data in bulk to direct
marketers -- just check a box on the signup form."
(Don't get me wrong -- I too would prefer that the whole system be
opt-in, and I'm aware of the argument that creating opt-out systems
legitimizes direct marketing that should be only opt-in to start with.
Unfortunately, the legitimization battle has already been lost for domain
names, so I'll take opt-out as a first step and cheer from the sidelines
while you fight the rest of the battle.)
