Define 'retail'. Register.com and NSI sure as hell don't sell domains for
$10.
If you're so damn unhappy with the prices, go and buy one 'retail' and then
resell it.
I'm happy with OpenSRS and its service and pricing.
I stopped doing business with NSI due to BAD service and HIGH prices. I
found a cheaper and in my opinion, better alternative. One that doesn't
screw me over every time I breathe!
Try going to one of those 'retail' places selling <$10, and if you can find
one with better service and faster response time, let us know. I tried some
of the CORENIC registrars and you know, I wasn't impressed at ALL with them.
They make OpenSRS seem like a dream to deal with.
Its doubtful you will. The so-called 'higher' price is purely subjective.
To me its worth it to pay a little more to give my clients the piece of mind
that they're getting something for their money. (Granted I'm relatively new
at being an RSP, but I won't (re)sell a product I don't believe in. I'd
rather pay a little more and get some service.)
The extra couple bucks is worth it considering:
1. OpenSRS provides practically 24 hour support. WIth the recent bugs in
the new registration stuff, its good to know we no more than had to mention
them here and viola, they were fixed. I've had to contact support after
hours and *someone* is there to help. Our competitors don't have that kind
of support.
2. OpenSRS staff has been nothing but professional and respectful. NSI
sure didn't give me that kind of service.
3. RSPs are a community. Here we are, all working toward the same goal.
Giving the market competition it deserves. (We do somewhat compete with
each other, but
4. The OpenSRS staff doesn't work for free.
5. There are some registrars selling for less, some sell for more. We're
at the lower end of the spectrum. For which I'm glad. If we were near the
middle or top of the scale, I'd say lower the price, but the wholesale price
of $10 ensures that all of the above items happen!
As I've said before, if you're not happy with OpenSRS, take your clients and
go to a 'retail' establishment. But when they fold or raise their prices,
and you're looking for a new registrar, we'll be right here waiting for you
to rejoin our family.
And if you ask me, this debate is pointless. The market will decide whether
or not the wholesale price needs to be dropped. Nothing in the market has
really dictated it yet.
