Yes, ignore my earlier reply.  I just did some direct queries on opensrs'
whois server and it does look like they messed up in their recent
changes.  Any domains that do not exist in the registry whois now return
the message "Can't get information on non-local domain..." instead of
something like "The domain doesn't exist in whois".

% whois -h whois.opensrs.net bogus-cards.com
Can't get information on non-local domain BOGUS-CARDS.COM
% whois -h whois.opensrs.net examplelskjhksjhs.com
Can't get information on non-local domain EXAMPLELSKJHKSJHS.COM
