Just so that we're all on the same page:
- When I say "RCL", I'm referring to the Reseller Client Library, which is the "official" client code -- the one you download from the Tucows.com site.
- By "official", I mean "officially sanctioned by Tucows".
- When I say "OpenSRS-SF:, I'm referring to the client code available from the SourceForge site.
Over the past two and a half years, Tucows has occasionally made comments
and statements that have intimated that the OpenSRS-SF SourceForge perl
client code would be either adopted as THE client code, integrated into the
Tucows supported client, or "we'll talk about that next month."
Can anyone shed light on where this client is going?
At the moment, there are no developers working on OpenSRS-SF, as everyone who worked on it are currently engaged in other projects. Since there have been no developers working on it for some time, it has fallen behind the current version of the RCL. Since it was never adopted as an "official" client, there is no support for it.
Being the new guy here, I'm not aware of the circumstances and decisions made that caused OpenSRS-SF to *not* be adopted as *the* official client.
We are undergoing a major site redesign and trying to decide which client to
hang our hats on. We went with the SourceForge version nearly three years
ago because it was going to become the supported client - any release now
(search the list archives if you don't believe me on this one).
Unfortunately it fell onto Paul to maintain this client all by himself - and
though he has done a great job, he's only one guy and is always behind the
curve.
Comments? Opinions? What's the state of the Tucows supported client? Does
it offer integration options for payment gateways yet?
RCL, the Tucows client, is the supported one. It is actively being maintained and upgraded, and because of this, it is the client I recommend.
There are no integration options for payment gateways right now. We have our own payment gateway, but it doesn't yet integrate with the RCL. There are plans in the works to make this happen. (Drop me a line if you'd like to know more about our payment gateway.)
The good news is that your posting to the list has sparked a lot of interest over here. A number of people here at have dropped by my desk today, asking what can be done about the client situation. The developers and I will be meeting to discuss what can be done, both in the short and long term.
