I'd like to turn the question around: What is the benefit of continuing with the current official code rather than making the SF code official?

Would this cause real continuity problems for anyone? Currently each
upgrade is essentially a new install anyway, so for me switching to
the SF code wouldn't be any more hassle than upgrading the RCL code
usually is -- and it would make future upgrades easier.

The SF code, if all other considerations are ignored, would be my preferred client. Going with the SF code -- which you still can do -- comes with a couple of problems:

a) It is not as up-to-date as RCL. It hasn't been updated in months, and in the meantime, changes have been made to SF that have been reflected in RCL. I don't know how much time and effort it would take to bring SF up to par with the changes in RCL.
b) We currently don't provide any tech support for it.

These two factors are the reason I am taking the "err on the side of caution" approach and offically recommending the RCL. It is guaranteed to work almost straight out of the box and is supported.

I am currently talking to the people in development, support and sales and together, we're looking at the options.

I have some questions, and I'm going to use the answers I get to draft up some kind of requirements that I'm going to take to the decision-makers here. (Although you may have seen these questions before, please keep in mind I'm still the "new guy" and may be unaware of questions that have been asked in the past.)

Suppose we decided to do what was promised earlier and switch wholesale to the SF version of the client.

- Aside from bringing the client up to date with the current version of OpenSRS, what features or enhancements would you like to see?
- Aside from Perl, are there any other languages you would like to see it implemented in?
- What level of technical support do you expect?
- Would you be willing to donate some time and effort to the development and maintenance of the client, now that it would be a genuine open source project?
