I have been struggling with this one lately.Personally, I think it's a good thing. Among other things, it helps to prevent you from accidentally renewing the wrong domain, and potentially reduce the odds of a "I paid for this domain not the 'owner' so by rights it is mine" dispute.
Should domain renewals require the username and password for a domain?
I have had a number of panic renewals this year because the user did not have access to the admin email any longer, the domain had expired without them receiving notification, and the website "died" until they could prove that they owned the domain through the FAX "change admin email" process.
I've had a number of different people ask me why they even need to know the username and password to renew a domain - and that they didn't used to need this information. I think that's true - it was not a requirement in early versions of the client code to know the username and password in order to renew a domain.
What are your thoughts on this one?

Keep in mind the RWI can be used to renew a domain without the password if needed, so in an emergency you can get the domain renewed.
