Authenticated SMTP (with SSL too!) seems to me like a no-brainer for ISPs. Why Sympatico doesn't implement it is beyond me.

Sympatico has been hit really bad by the last batch of Windows and Outlook viruses. Some of these viruses and trojans send mail themselves (they have a small SMTP server built in), or send mail via some external SMTP server. As a result, they've severely tighted up their mail sending restrictions. There was an article in the Toronto Star about it a few days back:

As to when it will improve? I would guess "never," though I don't know anybody who works at Sympatico myself.
