I'd say they should work - again - similar to how Firefox works... An option to hide the tab bar when there is only one tab in use... I'd also prefer the choice of horizontal or vertical, because I'd prefer vertical (on the left side, like I do now with Firefox). Horizontal screen real estate is much more precious that vertical, especially on a smaller screen...
