More reasons are at:

On OpenCouchSurfing it is described how it isn't trivial to make CouchSurfing
free software. And after all, the only real advantage I currently see over
BeWelcome is the size of the community - which we can all help to change.

I can't decide to be happy or sad. On one hand, this is great, but on the other
hand, CouchSurfing should be free software. IIRC, the only reason it isn't is
because the people in charge are anarchists (which is great) *but* they are
afraid of making their software free because it can then be exploited for
profit.

If anyone knows more, i'd love to know the details!

I may be a little bit late to the party (to have it being used for the
conference), but for everyone of you over on CouchSurfing:

BeWelcome is a free and open source alternative to that. It has way fewer
members but a great design - which are both reasons you should really check it
out at http://bewelcome.org
