On OpenCouchSurfing it is described how it isn't trivial to make CouchSurfing free software. And after all, the only real advantage I currently see over BeWelcome is the size of the community - which we can all help to change. IIRC, the only reason it isn't is because the people in charge are anarchists (which is great) *but* they are afraid of making their software free because it can then be exploited for profit.
