I guess that in the console, with root privileges, you'll be able to use 'mount' and 'umount' perfectly. Look at: http://www.lesswatts.org/tips/disks.php See if you can re-enable HAL (perhaps something like '/etc/init.d/hald restart'). Or if reboot helps.
