For some value of incompatible. I think you’d find that what really happens is that compilation by default is standards compliant, and really most people will find that everything Just Works. Perhaps. But since “illumos-gate” isn’t using “illumos” and has made clear that it never intends to, I’m happy with my choice. When I made this choice originally, it was that someday this could be adopted by illumos “upstream”. I no longer have any hope that this will ever happen, unless something (illumos-core?) were to replace it as the preferred core system. Most definitely I hope this won’t be “garrett”, as the vision is a bit grander than that. But I understand that right now my approach is unpopular — perhaps this is a consequence of my own unpopularity, as some have suggested.
