For some value of incompatible. I think you’d find that what really happens is
that compilation by default is standards compliant, and really most people will
find that everything Just Works. The exceptions will be some edge cases that
probably impact few people … of course those things that depend upon on “uname”
are going to break, but that’s part of the motivation of *changing* uname. :-)

Perhaps. But since “illumos-gate” isn’t using “illumos” and has made clear
that it never intends to, I’m happy with my choice. When I made this choice
originally, it was that someday this could be adopted by illumos “upstream”. I
no longer have any hope that this will ever happen, unless something
(illumos-core?) were to replace it as the preferred core system.

Most definitely I hope this won’t be “garrett”, as the vision is a bit grander
than that. But I understand that right now my approach is unpopular — perhaps
this is a consequence of my own unpopularity, as some have suggested.

I did consider choosing a different name entirely than illumos, but I still
have a certain sense of ownership of the name, and I don’t want to waste
another day of my life trying to select a different name.
