Hey Guys, I’m looking for some information on Illumos regarding SPARC support. I’ve been a long Time user of FreeBSD, but I’ve been put into the position of managing some older SPARC boxes. Currently, they are running the latest Solaris 10 release from Oracle, but seeing what’s been done to Solaris 11 i don’t see Solaris being a viable OS in the future.
I have experience in C and x86 assembly, but I’m now going down the path of learning to write code for SPARC. FreeBSD has a SPARC port, but it’s got issues with SPARC. If i’m right, illumos doesn’t explicitly support SPARC, but most of the source from OpenSolaris is still there. Whether it’s FreeBSD or Illumos, I’m most likely going to start working on getting SPARC support working better, I’m just trying to figure out which one will be a better starting point. Ideally, i would rather go with Illumos as dtrace is currently somewhat lacking on FreeBSD, as well as other things. I aslo understand that some SPARC machines required closed source modules that are currently being proposed to be removed form illumos. Do we know how complex these modules are? I would be up for attempting to reverse engineer and write new ones. I would imagine that hardware documentation is somewhat lacking though. ------------------------------------------- illumos-discuss Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/182180/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/182180/21175430-2e6923be Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=21175430&id_secret=21175430-6a77cda4 Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com
