thanksall
I was now able to boot and install OmniOS 151016when

- using a CD with the .iso
- using an Sata CD drive

bios settings
- Advanced > Boot: Install Windows 7 USB support: enabled
- Boot > Boot mode: Legacy

When I tried with an USB CD drive, setup failed as well
so this is definitly an USB problem (yes, I used the USB2 ports)

Without the Windows 7 support setting, I was able to boot up to
the screen with the keyboard selector but then the keyboard was not working.

As these boards do not have ps/2 connectors for a keyboard
you must care about this setting

Another hint may give Solaris 11.3
After the probing for device nodes, it reports
not a UFS magic number
0x0
0x0
0xd8d06ca1
0x24023f23
0x0

(not sure if this is helpful)

Hope that this can be fixed as these socket 1151 boards will become very common
as well as support for the onboard Intel X550 10G nic

Please see if your BIOS has a "USB2 backward compatibility" setting of some
sort? If it does, please set it. There's no XHCI support in illumos currently.
I looked at the product page:

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Xeon/C236_C232/X11SSH-CTF.cfm

Sorry for not reading that. I'm assuming you're using one of the USB2.0 ports
for booting? If not, please use one.
