Hi

So after the weekend and some more clarification I'd say I can confirm
Alasdair here
As I understood:

- iCore will be fully working OS, not just a struct, Nexenta might
input and support it as much as it serves them for building their
appliance OS with it
- iCore will not be using Debian-sourced packages, it's about
converting IPS to DEB (there is an ips-to-deb tool from Nexenta)
- StormOS allways used package from Debian, and will re-introduce a
preference over GNU tools where it doesn't break compatibility with
illumos

As iCore will focus more on the building a core OS out of OI's IPS
collection, a portion of current NCP users might not see
their needs covered by this OS distribution. So basically current NCP
users for whom the community apliance OS isn't what
they are looking for will have a choice to make once iCore is ready:

- Switch to iCore for those who want to have a user experience like OI
and the possibility to have an eased access the collection of packages
already maintained by the OpenIndiana Project
- Switch to StormOS for those who want a more Debian-like user
experience and and eased access to the collection of packages already
maintained by the Debian Project

As such at StormOS there is a belief that the effort for packaging the
illumos source into DPKG has not
to be duplicated there because at least the structure of the packages
may be shared between those 2 distributions.

I'm looking forwards to see iCore become available and I hope Nexenta
will do it's best to make a good transition possible for existing
users of NCP.
In the end this transition can be a win-win situation for all of us as
wrote Alasdair.

Regards,
Mathieu
