I am using ZFS over an encrypted device. It works. But the BIG problem
is that you lose ZFS portability, you usually need to keep using the
same OS, because disk encryption is usually OS dependent. For
instance, I am using Linux LUKS. I can not import that harddisk under
*bsd or Solaris.

So, yes, having native ZFS encryption would be VERY nice.
