I am not familiar with your hardware.

One suggestion is to check your BIOS settings to see if there is firmware protection against unattended booting or reset.

Thanks for your suggestion. I have checked all the BIOS settings and there is nothing special in the boot options.
It seems to happen only with "recent" Illumos boot loader.
Older versions of Openindiana Hipster (2015) boot fine, but it breaks after a "pkg update" to latest Hipster.

I will continue trying to debug the issue but it is very frustrating.

Thanks.
Oscar

(I have an old dual CPU hardware network server stored in my attic that has a physical switch on an internal card intended to help protect the server from attack so it stays up and running.)

Trying to install Illumos on a Dell PowerEdge R805, with dual 6-core AMD
Opteron 2435, 32 GB
    RAM, 2x1TB HDD.

Using the latest installers for Openindiana-Hipster or OmniOS-CE (DVD or
USB media), the boot
menu screen loads fine, with the countdown "Autoboot in 10 sec...".
When the countdown ends, it looks like Illumos is loading

    Loading unix...
    Loading /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive...
    Loading /platform/i86pc/amd64/boot_archive.hash...

then the system reboots to the BIOS in a loop.

If during the "Autoboot in # sec..." I press Enter or 1 for "Boot
Multi-User", then illumos
starts normally and the installation is successful.

But then, the same issue occurs when booting/rebooting from the hard drives
(Hipster or
OmniOS). After the autoboot countdown, the system reboots to BIOS in a loop. If
"Enter" is
pressed during the countdown, Illumos boots correctly.

The same installer media works fine on other systems. The problem seems to
be only on the
    PowerEdge R805.

I also tested with FreeBSD, which uses a similar boot loader, but with
FreeBSD the system
    always boots correctly.

    Any idea what's happening?

    Thanks,
    Oscar
