Hello,

I had wiped out the partitions of Windows 10 & Ubuntu via
format+fdisk. Then setup a custom zpool based on the instructions
given in the below email thread:

https://lists.omniti.com/pipermail/omnios-discuss/2017-November/009402.html

I also tried the whole disk option in the OmniOS CE installer, it
simply installs to an EFI partition. In this case also, after install
bsd loader failed to load the OS, simply throwing up the same error
"start not found" and displaying the OK prompt.

I don't know what to do further for resolving this. May be the issues
reported for the BSD loader in 2017 are yet unresolved.

Thanks
Karthik

Try removing the partitions before installing.
In the Illumos installer, open a shell or single-user, then "format" +
"fdisk"
to remove the partitions.
The installer should then use the whole disk(s) for the zfs rpool.

Here's something you could also try;
Boot off some BSD boot media, drop into a shell, issue; "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/<your_hdd>" and let it run for a minute or so before hitting "Ctrl+C". Once done, issue "sync", let it run it's course, then issue a reboot and boot off your illumos distro. There's a high chance this will do the trick for you.
