As for the heart/head dichotomy, I'm ultimately guided by the heart. It's strange. There are mountains of logical decisions and reasons for doing the littlest things that all lead up to an infusion of life and emotional satisfaction. Come to think of it, users usually relate to a UI on a very emotional level too.
