Besides alphabetical and categorical you can also organize information based on location, time and hierarchy (or even randomly). I usually look at "alphabetical" as the organizational scheme of last resort (no pun). It's okay if there's a particular need to appear impartial or there's no other underlying structure but it abdicates the responsiblity to impose order. In your portal you'll almost certainly want to combine a few methods. For instance, if you go with categorical as a top level organizational scheme then you'll need to design how items are organized within a category. Hierarchical? Chronological?
