There is a book out with a history of jet packs - I'll dig out the reference.
The latest issue of the IEEE Spectrum has the best and worst of new technology. "Brainwave user interfaces for games" got a loser award because 1. they barely worked and 2. it took thirty seconds to fire a weapon.
