@Dan - I completely agree. Very frustrating for someone who spends a lot of time evangelizing the value of good design.
@Patrick - I'm not threatened at all, and I started out as a programmer (BS and MS) - and still code when I can - just wrote some javascript as a matter of fact. But what Joel says is like saying "just have the building contractor or structural engineer due the architectural renderings"... It's complete BS and undermines the value and need for skilled designers. And unfortunately his voice is widely heard.
