Don Norman's assertion that needs follow technology would explain why so many people don't even see the potential need for something even when they are presented with it. Think about the computer executive who said "Why would anyone want a personal computer in their home?" Or "If God had meant for us to fly, he would have give us tickets."
I would go as far as suggesting that we not only think of needs after the fact but most of the time we have a hard time even seeing the need for something new. http://andDESIGNmagazine.blogspot.com ________________________________________ From: new-boun...@ixda.org [new-boun...@ixda.org] On Behalf Of Jarod Tang [jarod.t...@gmail.com] Sent: Wednesday, December 09, 2009 2:31 PM To: disc...@ixda.org Subject: [IxDA Discuss] [anthrodesign] Don Norman: Technology First, Needs Last ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Mitchell Gass <mitchell at participatorydesign.com> Date: Thu, Dec 10, 2009 at 1:44 AM Subject: [anthrodesign] Don Norman: Technology First, Needs Last To: anthrodesign at yahoogroups.com I'd be interested in getting the list's take on Don Norman's latest essay http://www.jnd.org/dn.mss/technology_first_needs_last.html in which he asks the question, "To achieve major conceptual breakthroughs, we should do ethnographic field study to understand the hidden unmet needs of our potential customers. Right or wrong?"
