I think I did most of mine on a Gentoo system I setup at home.  I was 
determined to do a stage 1 build, and learnt a lot about the basics, 
structure etc. by doing it, even if I didn't necessarily learn the most 
practical stuff.
It also taught me to be careful with the command prompt, and avoid root 
except when you really need it.
Frustrates me no end when I see sysadmins who escalate to root as the 
very first thing they do on a box, even when it's totally unnecessary.  
I'm not averse to using root, just avoid it unless it's actually necessary.
