I think someone else earlier in the thread pointed out how you could turn it off, if you have a google account and set it in your account preferences. > I don't think of myself as a Luddite, but I surely do wish that changes > made to things I use were made to be beneficial, and not just because > someone thought they'd be clever and cool. That's all subjective. I think the improvements are beneficial. If it can perform the search algorithm and display for me the results without my having to actually hit enter and submit the results, that makes the most efficient use of my time and energy. Also, you can easily see if a search string is taking you down the wrong path and can correct it in real-time, meaning no type/submit/read/CRAP/re-type/re-submit cycle. So long as (in this example) it isn't slowing down my experience in any way (and it isn't) then not only is it "clever and cool", but I'd make an argument that it's highly beneficial in terms of search efficiency. > To others: I have multiple gmail accounts. "I don't think I should have to tell the search engine who I am so that it can always remember my personal preferences". On the face of it, that just seems ridiculous, no? The site has to know "who you are" (in the vaguest sense) to know in advance what personal preferences you want if they're not the default values.
