Eh? What crap? I have nothing on the right side of the results.
On the left side I have what amount to three unintrusive sections:
1. Quick links to to the other major Google tools:
* Everything
* Images
* Videos
* News
* Shopping
2. My location, and an option to change it
3. Quick access to search refinement tools.
Is that what you consider the crap?

You can easily set that to off, change the number of results, and it sticks.

Hmmm. Not my experience.
I hope you can reevaluate at least after changing the Instant search off.
