I came across an interesting post over on reddit: I have a feeling that it's only a matter of time before our careers become regulated by an external governing body. We would gain professional status and prestige in the eyes of the public; but loose our autonomy as individuals.
There would be mandatory certifications, licenses, and possibly even insurance that we would need to hold in order to practice system administration. 1. Is there anything that we can do to stop such a change? 2. Is there anything that we can do to embrace such a change? 3. Why am I wrong in thinking that this is even an issue? EDIT An example: NCEES PE Electrical and Computer: Computer Engineering Please note that I am not talking about certification. I am talking about creating a License to Practice. There's some interesting discussion as well in the comments: http://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/m9tnd/how_long_do_you_think_until_system_administration/
