Where to jump back in....

Well, don't tell the suits, but if they hire somebody competent for more than
what I'm making...I'd be fine with it. Of course, the problem is they haven't
hired anybody competent since me (though some of it is my fault, since I was
involved in some of those searches.)

Also the organization promotes incompetence... so those people that make more
than I do....don't have any technical skills to back up why they get paid that.

A few years ago....there was a system outage....director was demanding that we
drop everything and come into work and sit around and look pretty like were
doing something in the middle of the night. But, we were already chatting on
IRC and working on the problem by remote, and we we're already on the phone
with Sun. But, he insisted that we needed to come in so he could yell at us
directly when his superior shows up... manager told him no, don't know what the
director's response was going to be...because his superior finally walked in at
that moment.... And, now the director position has been vacant for a couple of
years now.

Before that...our previous SA manager...who surprises us every now and then by
submitting tickets showing how little SA they knew...got shoved aside (another
SA manager was complaining at lunch today that we don't fire incompetence...)
into what is an application administration position (though they apparently did
try to make them a subordinate to successor, but new manager said no.) But the
person continued to work under the 'manager contract'....so it took a couple
years before new manager could official be a manager.

As for me...as long as it pays the bills and I get to keep doing what I
love...I'm good. Though location could be nicer....or having that little bit
more so I can afford to go to more LISA's would be nice (though it wasn't just
the cost of flying to and staying in Boston that stopped me this year.... This
year's LISA conflicts with my dad's 70th birthday.)

Also how much we can pay for a position is set before we advertise the
position....we've always included it in the advertisements we do...though
there's been talk from above that we should leave it out.... get more
applicants.

As a side note....last time we did a search (actually I guess last couple of
times)....we made an offer, only to find out that the guy wanted an H1B
transfer. Its not an H1B job....though it turned out he got it wrong, he was
an H1B contractor to the headhunter that found him our opening and he needed us
to contract the position out to the company he worked for. Yeah, the we and
the state don't do that. Though while talking to immigration
specialist...there was discussion of whether the position we had advertised
even met H1B requirements...IE: H1B requires 5 years experience and a related
degree....we don't require a degree and only 4 years experience. And, we
didn't think we offered enough money for H1B....but according to the
immigration specialist, the average salary for a system administrator in Riley
county is $35k. (the position was offering $55-60k) In the previous
search...the person revealed after the offer that he was only in the country on
a student visa....g
eneral counsel's office got involved that time....
