Evan,

I concur with Chris. The pricing structure is fairly simple: a recurring
monthly charge for the toll-free number and a per-minute rate for calls. The
choice of technology (SIP, PSTN) will govern costs.

Something you might also want to consider is service continuity. For example,
assuming this customer has their own on-premise equipment, if they suffer a
failure/outage/act of god, they may want the toll-free number to be rerouted to
an alternate, off-premise service to at least take the calls and shunt them to
voice mail (or similar). Each carrier has their own flavor of this redirect and
costs vary.

That's pretty much what's expected, yes. You're paying them by the minute to
route calls where you want them to go, so that your customers don't pay long
distance fees to call you if they aren't local.

The good news is that with VoIP, those per-minute rates are generally pretty
low. The company that I use for my home phone service offers toll-free for a
base price of $3.95/month and 2.9 cents per minute for calls from the
continental US. There are other providers with comparable rates.

Group,

I need to register a toll free 800 number for a customer and am wondering what
the process for doing so would be and whether this should be purchased through
their SIP provider or another vendor.

A quick google showed a lot of websites that will charge you money to register
phone numbers with them but you must also then pay them the per minute fees for
these calls. I'm not sure if this is what should be expected or if I should be
looking into other possibilities (flat fees, etc.).

If anybody has any experience in this area I'd appreciate your advice.

Thanks,
Evan
