Hi Pamela. I'm loving this thread. I've long been an advocate of teaching best practices (ie, the stuff we've worked out really works). I've felt this more acutely in recent years as it has become increasingly evident that the bulk of people doing operations work seem to be doing it without the benefit of a lot of the experience and knowledge out in the community.
I'd say we should set up an obscure thoughts/knowledge wiki, making it easy for everyone to contribue whatever tidbit, whenever the moment struck.
This is one of the two reasons I stared Pracops (http://www.pracops.com) as a personal wiki. The other was to more formally document best practices and knowledge on operations. I've recently concluded this would work better as a collaborative effort and will be allowing account creation soon.
