If you are an aerospace afficionado, you should definitely make the effort to see the Udvar-Hazy center which is an annex of the air &space museum adjacent to Dulles airport. See it on your way out of town since you will have a car to get there. Among other things: rare WWI and WWII fighters, *the* Enola Gay, an sr71, a space shuttle, johnson's air force 1, the gossamer albatross, stunt and experimental planes and gyrocopters, some monster rockets, satelites, planetary explorer test models, and the scale model used for Close Encounters of the 3rd kind.
In terms of memorials I really like the newish WWII one and the Jefferson. Both are a bit out of the way. Renting a bike to see memorials is worth it. The star spangle banner is at american history (yeah, that one) and recently has undergone a preservation overhaul. The national museum of the american indian has a really impressive interior space. The jewish holocaust museum, which I have not been to yet, has limited admission, so please plan ahead and research if you are interested. The national zoo is .3 miles from the conf hotel. Phil, Other than not looking at old buildings, I'm not sure what you're going for. If you're looking for something beyond the monuments and Smithsonian complex standard bearers, here are some options: http://www.spymuseum.org/ http://www.newseum.org/ http://www.ushmm.org/ And this is a list of "yummy" restaurants suggested by Jess@USENIX when I asked her for ideas earlier today: Astor Mediterranean 1829 Columbia Road Northwest Washington, DC 20009 http://www.astorfoods.com/ ~approx 1 mile from hotel Las Canteras 2307 18th St NW Washington, DC 20009 http://www.lascanterasdc.com/ ~approx 1 mile from hotel Mama Ayesha's 1967 Calvert St NW Washington, DC 20009http://www.mamaayeshas.com/ ~approx .5 mile from hotel Lebanese Taverna 2641 Connecticut Ave NW (between N Woodley Rd & N 24th St) Washington, DC 20008 http://www.lebanesetaverna.com/ ~approx .2 mile from hotel Carolyn On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 11:52 PM, Phil Pennock < [email protected]> wrote: > I need help filling my schedule for next week. :) > > I'll be driving into D.C. on Tuesday, from Pittsburgh, and leaving > Friday evening.
