First a bit of backstory: I got rid of nearly all my gmail accounts, but I kept the two that were my name. The oldest ([email protected]) was from an invite sent to me by a friend (Len Sassaman), and I've kept it, and the other, logging in now and then to make sure that someone hadn't sent me an email there by mistake. Both of them had vacation messages set, so that anyone legitimate would know that I'd moved on. Any messages sent there in the past six months were by mistake, but I was still getting email from acquaintances before then. I'd send them a quick email with a more reasonable address (sometimes the one I'm using now, but not always).
I used it for a while on G+ but got tossed off in the great purge when they decided that "Etaoin Shrdlu" was not a real person. People vouched for me (including several who worked at Google), but to no avail. Truth be told, it was mostly annoying, and I moved on. Today I did a random check of the two email addresses; the first one was fine, but my Shrdlu account had this message: Your profile is currently suspended Until your profile is unsuspended, you will be unable to use this feature. Visit your profile to learn more. The link (https://profiles.google.com/me?hl=en) is one of those little jokes that people who write software like to make when they don't test things. If I click it, it takes me right back to that page. Having some ability to think about things, I suspected (and was correct) that the search for Google would have me logged in, and that I could get to the account from there. You're probably wondering why I'm bringing this up here, but I've thought about this, and realized this is going to have implications for others who use gmail (and there's a zillion and one Android phones and tablets out there). *If* someone has been tossed from G+ for whatever reason, and ignored it (as in, probably cared about the same amount I did, which is next to NIL), their profile is still probably suspended, and they'll be unable to access gmail. I may be a complete outlier in this, and I'm still trying to decide how to handle it. If it were anything else, I'd just delete the damned thing but I really can't. Man, I'm sure glad I don't have any youtubers or other data out there. Remember when Google really wasn't evil? Me too. :-( -- Life may not be the party we hoped for, but while we are here, we might as well dance. _______________________________________________ Discuss mailing list [email protected] https://lists.lopsa.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/discuss This list provided by the League of Professional System Administrators http://lopsa.org/
