William and Tom,

I used to do the backpack thing but found myself usually slinging one
shoulder strap instead of both. I bought a Timbuk2 Command (
http://www.timbuk2.com/tb2/products/command-tsa-friendly-ipad-laptop-messenger-bag).
I travel for work on occasion and this bag is great. It will unzip and
fold flat to send through the airport scanner. You don't have to take your
laptop out and juggle it into a bin. I have the medium and it fits a 15"
MBP plus an iPad, no problem. It has a compartment on the bottom for power
bricks and some cords. Roomy, plenty of pockets and a zippered pouch. It
does have a pair of velcro strips that can be covered (if you don't want
the ripping sound every time you open the flap). It also has two heavy
duty cinches for the top flap. The strap is beefy and the shoulder pad is
nice. It has an outside side pocket for a water bottle or small umbrella.
Some versions are nylon and some are canvas. I have the green canvas one.

I will also give Timbuk2 a shout out for their customer service. My
original bad had a manufacturing defect with the zipper. I submitted a
warranty claim for it, emailed some digital photos and they took the bag
back with zero hassles. They credited me for the bag so I can pick out a
replacement (didn't have to be the same bag if I didn't like it). They
also gave me a heads up that new colors were coming out if I wanted to wait
a couple of weeks. I did and wound up with a 2013 version. The Command is
mass produced (in China I believe). It may or may not matter to you. If
you get a custom one, they make it in California.

One of the guys at work has a Chrome bag. It is a real bike messenger bag.
His didn't have a laptop pocket. You had to buy a zippered sleeve and
have it bounce around inside. The strap is like a real seatbelt with a
real seatbelt buckle. Hardcore stuff. They have some custom bags but they
are a little pricey.

Another hardcore messenger bag is R.E.Load (reloadbags.com). Think of them
as a cross between Timbuk2 and Chrome. Funky artsy stuff. They will do
total custom designs for the top flap. Another guy at work has one and it
is a nice bag. They too are more of a regular messenger bag so you'll need
a zip sleeve for your laptop. They are based out of Philly and I believe
all of their bags are made there.

Jon brings up an excellent point: the bigger the bag, the more crap you'll
carry around. Your back and neck will hate you.
