Nobody has yet mentioned LL Bean? Compared to others mentioned here, LL Bean is inexpensive. They have a no-questions-asked lifetime warranty.
The Quad now comes with a padded laptop sleeve. There are enough compartments, and sufficient separation between them, that I don't have a problem carrying a laptop, clothing, and lunch. External water bottle mesh pockets -- also great for small umbrellas. Cinch straps, so it doesn't flap around when you're not fully loaded. A hip strap and chest strap, so if you're carrying heavy, it still feels good an hour later. A rugged single-hand carry strap up top. And, of course, available in several colors including "I'm an engineer black" and "That one's mine! red".
