It's not free. A portion of your conference fee goes to the national 
organization, generally $50.00, IIRC, but a board member can feel free to 
correct me if they're getting a discount now.

If I declined the membership, knowing what I know, I'd expect to get a discount 
since the conference would no longer need to pay the national.

No you're correct there, that was more a joke that formed around my whole 
"kicking up to the capo" line and whose humor may not have been clear in text 
form.

Except that they *did* pay for it. They just had the conference organizers 
acting as middle-men and were given no choice in the matter.
