This is a feature, as far as Gmail is concerned. Firstnamelastname, firstname.lastname, and fir.stna.me.l.a.s.t.na.me are all the same – they implicitly strip periods from their addresses. You can use this for things like subtle sender tracking (put the period in different places for different senders, so you can see who’s selling your address to spammers).
David Smith From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Crocker, Deborah Sent: Friday, January 23, 2015 8:18 AM To: Lopsa Discussion Subject: [lopsa-discuss] Help with gmail technical problem I’ve got a problem with getting another persons gmail. I am [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> and I occasionally get email to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> but this is different person. I discovered it with a Vendor rewards account where I got an update and logged (had to recover a password, hmmm) and found stuff I didn’t recognize. Searched through a bit more and found a name and city. Person actually lives 60 miles down the road. Then realized it wasn’t my email address. So I called the vendor and the problem seemed to get sorted out. But it continues with other vendors. I started getting facebook friend suggests for people I have no clue about. Sure enough at the bottom of the email it says it was sent to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. Recently got from another vendor, one which I’m pretty sure the original enrollee would need to get. I don’t get email all the time for this person (no messages from other persons). The errant messages all say they were sent to [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>. So is it the vendors or gmail? I could see some company dropping my “.” and sending my email to the other person, but why this way? Can guarantee the gmail online help center doesn’t cover this one. Thanks for any help D.
