I had forgotten that you can get a Chip+PIN with a Platinum card.  I
travel almost enough to make the annual fee worthwhile, but not quite
enough :-)

I Europe you can get Amex Gold with Chip+PIN.  I tried to apply using
our London office as a mail drop, but they stopped me at "you are a US
citizen, no EU AMEX for you".

Btw, It has become practically impossible to open a bank account in EU
if you're a US citizen, by the way. Several US friends who had had UK
Barclay's and other bank accounts in UK for convenience had their
accounts cancelled,,,
