I like Matt's definition, though I might change 'computer
infrastructure' to 'technology infrastructure'. Systems Administration
to me encompasses everything from front-line help desk technicians
(who are maintaining the end-user desktop and mobile systems) to SREs
writing code to automate deployment and management of hundreds of
thousands of systems. I don't care if you're dealing with end users,
racks of hardware, global networks, or APIs... its all part of
Systems Administration.
In light of a number of very inclusive responses like this one, I think
it might be fruitful to also ask the negative case: what is a System
Administrator not?
There are some initially obvious categories, like "a System
Administrator is not a salesperson" (although even this is arguable),
but even within the specific scope of "deals with technology", are there
any roles that cannot be assigned to a System Administrator? If there
are no such roles, perhaps we all just start writing "Fixes Computers"
on our business cards and call it a day.

I'll also refer to a message I sent last summer describing many types
of SAs and why they're all welcome in LOPSA.

I think that still holds for the most part.
I don't think of System Administration as a job - I think of it as
a responsibility. You might not *be* a system administrator, but
you *do system administration*, whether you're a developer or a
DevOps Engineer, or a secretary.
(and my very personal view is that LOPSA should cater to helping
people who *do system administration*, not *are system
administrators*, because there's far more of the first than the
second).
