My two cents:

In brief, to make OpenStack irrelevant, I think providers would need to adopt
emerging features/demands much faster and be more flexible. Short of that or
the OpenStack community/leadership failing or splintering, I expect it to grow
and be around a while (at least in some form).

It feels like there is definitely a lot changing right now due to dynamic and
externally hosted infrastructure. Still, I see OpenStack mostly gaining
momentum, not losing it, due to players like HP and VMware trying to integrate
it. However, that can swing the other way quickly and it's true that other
similar projects (e.g. eucalyptus) and a few early OpenStack players (e.g.
Nebula.com) have diminished or folded.

The main reason I think OpenStack (or something similar) will continue to exist
is that many people want flexibility not offered by external services. My site
is a good example of that. We are frankly somewhat frustrated by OpenStack but
it still seems like the best option for our agenda, which is about scientific
computing and currently underserved by IaaS providers.

And I think other factors driving that desire for flexibility are innovations
that sometimes are slow to be adopted by commercial service providers. Those
providers typically want to be able to offer a scalable and reliable service
stack. But not everyone values scalability or even reliability over certain
innovative features. Integrating container management to orchestration
platforms is an example of that.

Interesting question. Thanks for asking it; I'm enjoying the responses.
