Maria offered similar words yesterday. I really like the idea of emphasizing this aspect on the "what is opensource" page. Outreach to people who are not part of our community is a challenge; one of the nice ideas (wish I had the quote) was that people try open source software because the price is free; we want them to stay because of the freedom. The opportunity to join the community is a big benefit of OSGeo - but we should honestly recognize that it is intimidating.
