Embedded / Electronics night featuring a postmortem on bit-banging 10BASE-T Ethernet Thursday, October 11th, 2012 7:00 pm SkullSpace Lounge, 3rd floor, 123 Adelaide St.
A few us are hosting an embedded / electronics night next Thursday (October 11th) in the SkullSpace Lounge, starting at 7pm. Admission is free, refreshments will be provided, and we're giving away a microcontroller development kit. We'll kick it off at 7:00 with a presentation - this week a postmortem on a project I recently completed that involved bit-banging 10BASE-T Ethernet. I learned a lot while struggling to get that working and I'll go over the challenges and eventual solutions I came up with. I'll go over how Ethernet actually works on the wire (not just the bits like you see in wireshark, but actual voltages and how those bits are encoded), and how I was able to skip over the important (but not strictly necessary) magnetics and interface directly with a microcontroller. After the talk we'll break out into group(s) to discuss and work on project ideas. I'll have a bunch of Nokia 5110 LCDs[1] that I'll be working on a bit of a special library for (more on that in a future talk!), Ben has some prototyping to do on his bluetooth kinesis keyboard[2] hack, and Jason will be working on his telebot - an RC car over Android + the rogers cell network. Anyone and everyone interested in electronics and embedded design and development is invited to come. Admission is free, refreshments will be provided (Pie and punch, but without the pie) and we'll be giving away a microcontroller development kit. Cheers, -Andrew [1] http://hades.mech.northwestern.edu/images/d/d1/Nu32v2_nokia5110_example.jpg [2] http://www.ergocanada.com/images/kinesis_classic.jpg
