Wait, is that what a side is?

TIL.

To be fair, I only heard about things like Castleing (Castling?) last October.

Oh I thought that's what per side meant. Yeah I want to play 3 minutes per
game.

Not sure if used wrong units three different times...
..Or if playing a REALLY deep version.

      Hey folks,

I'm on a real chess kick lately, so I'm hoping there are lots of people
who want to play it on Saturday April 5th (international table top day).
I'm going to be hanging out 10am-6pm. I just sent a last minute invite
for the Manitoba Chess Association to pass on to its members/followers,
so we'll see if anything comes of that.

If you've never played with a chess clock, it's pretty wicked (also a
nice way to set handicap between players of different strength). I don't
know if anyone from the local chess association/community will show up
with any, but failing that I'd suggest people try out the chess clock
      smartphone/tablet apps available.
(I'll bring my $85 Chinese 7" Android for this)

In that regard, keep direct watch over your own device, not only by
reason of theft, but because touch screens need to treated gently, so
its good to monitor that's happening. For this reason I wouldn't suggest
"lightning"/"bullet" [0-3 minutes per side] or the faster side of
"blitz" [3-15 minutes per side]. Watch out for the fact that some people
have a tendency to hit the "clock" with the pieces they capture!

Personally, regardless of real or fake clock, I much prefer "rapid" time
controls [15-60 minutes per side]. Not only time to think but also time
enough to write my early moves down for later analysis.

Worth mentioning, a popular feature of digital chess clocks is
"increment" -- you can set them to a base time and then have extra
seconds added when you move so that a player moving fast enough never
runs out of time when they need it late in the game.

      Mark

      p.s.

If the chess doesn't happen, dies out or I need a break from it, I'd
also be up for: Settlers, Ticket to Ride, Risk, poker, hearts, cribbage,
Wizard (I'll bring), Monopoly (proper tournament rules which speed
things along, no house rules!), or Citadels (I'll bring) during the
      10am-6pm hours I'll be around.
